WPX WordPress Hosting Interruption

WPX WordPress Hosting Interruption

WPX Managed WordPress Hosting suffered an outage that may have removed thousands of sites. The interruption has lasted for hours. Many customers complain about the lack of communication from WPX.

WPX Hosting Site was unavailable

Even the hosting site of the WPX site itself was not available.

A page hosted on their knowledge base subdomain (kb.wpx.net) issued this error message:

Problems with the WPX Chicago Data Center

WPX respondent sent out a template response to customers who complained on Twitter. The answer begins with a comma that was probably there so that the Twitter member’s name could be inserted in the blank space in front of the comma.

That canned response contributed to a sense of unrest and anger in a discussion in the Affiliate SEO Mastermind Facebook Group.

Various members commented on the perceived lack of communication, calling it “useless.” While another member of that Facebook group wrote that the only update on Twitter was “pathetic”.

Another member said they liked WPX but that they could have had more goodwill if they had been more forthcoming with information and called the lack of communication unacceptable.

Is that why WPX Down?

The Whois information for WPX.net indicates that their domain is on Steadfast ASN (Autonomous System Numbers).

ASN denotes the networks of IP addresses and they can be used to identify what the underlying data center infrastructure, which can sometimes give a clue as to what is going on.

Steadfast maintains data centers in Chicago, which coincides with tweets from WPX that the problem is in a Chicago data center.

So it is possible that Steadfast may be the underlying infrastructure for WPX hosting, although with the lack of information from WPX at present it is difficult to say with 100% certainty.

The Help page Standhaft reveals this support message:

“Customers experience network disruptions due to malfunctions in the access switch.

Our alarm system detected one of our switches running inconsistently, and after an initial investigation, the network team evaluated a few possible situations that could trigger this incident.

In the first hour, we restored services to 60% of the affected segment of clients. We are currently replacing the device that is causing this outage and we should be online within an hour. ”

Sometimes problems happen

In this case, the problem is out of the hands of WPX. It is a problem with the underlying infrastructure on which they depend.

A customer on Twitter called for patience:

I experienced Cloud Cache issues last night and I thought they fixed it, but a sad way to start the week. Anyway @WPX_Hosting team has always been kind to me and even though I do not like it, I think we should be patient with them.

It seems that the problem is being addressed, so patience is not a bad piece of advice. Issues like this are usually not predictable, and even though the service is in the “cloud”, there is still hardware involved that can fail.
