The Google Bug causes image issues in the most popular stories

The Google Bug causes image issues in the most popular stories

Google’s search contact, Danny Sullivan, reports that an error in the search results is causing images in the Top Stories not to be reproduced correctly.

“We are working to fix an error that causes some images in Top Stories on Google search results not to be rendered correctly. Our apologies – we hope to resolve this soon! ”

Here is an example of what the error looks like in action. Instead of displaying an image, the thumbnail is either solid color or simply blank.

It is very easy to replicate this by searching for newsworthy topics. This seems to affect a significant amount of news stories.

SEOs on Twitter have been reporting seeing this issue since early this morning:

Hmm. Not sure what’s going on here. Across various SERP features on Google (especially top stories and tweet carousels), I see that image previews are missing. Either glossy or blurred as in the picture. Probably a mistake, but it’s pretty weird … pic.twitter.com/zvayPrzoq3

There is no official assessment of how many pages are affected or when the issue will be resolved.

Google always aims to get things fixed “quickly”, which may mean that it will be fixed within hours, but other times it may take days to fix search errors.

Until then, do not be alarmed if your photos do not appear in the carousel Top Stories. The problem is probably not on your end.

Expect another update from Sullivan as soon as the issue is resolved.
