Google Ads' new cryptocurrency policies come into force

As of yesterday, Google will only run cryptocurrency ads from advertisers registered with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) as a money service company or be a federal or state chartered bank that has also completed the new verification process and meets all other requirements for the category.

This is a particularly sensitive category, as fraud has occurred in the past and promised bitcoin giveaways, including a scam involving Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, which resulted in a lawsuit against Google and YouTube in 2020.

Requirements for cryptocurrency exchanges and wallets to run Google Ads

In order for these CryptoCurrency exchanges and wallets to advertise on Google Ads, these advertisers must be registered with FinCEN as a Money Services company and with at least one state as a money transfer or a federal or state chartered banking entity.

Companies must comply with relevant legal requirements, including any local legal requirements, whether at the state or federal level.

To advertise in this category, all advertisers must review the new verification process for cryptocurrency exchanges and wallets, which was updated in July. Advertisers can begin the certification process here. previous Cryptocurrency Exchange certifications will be revoked on August 3rd.

The certification process requires legal documentation for the company as well as personal identities, similar to the verification process for other advertisers.

Additional restrictions

Although some crypto ads are allowed, many are still not. Advertisers are still not allowed to promote ad destinations that collect or compare issuers of cryptocurrencies or related products.

Advertisers may also not advertise initial coin offer DeFi trading protocols or otherwise promote the purchase, sale or trading of cryptocurrencies or related products.
