Google’s Danny Sullivan confirmed that search results showing FAQ-structured data are now limited to only two results. Danny also confirmed that it was not done to limit the misuse of the structured data rich results of SEOs and explained the reasons why they did this.

Frequently Asked Questions About Rich Search Engine Search Results (SERPs)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) structured data is one way to qualify to display FAQ content in Google’s SERPs. The advantage of this type of screen is that it makes a site’s position take up more space in the search results.

This kind of rich results was announced by Google on May 8, 2019.

A FAQ page contains a list of frequently asked questions and answers on a specific topic.

For example, a FAQ page on an e-commerce site can provide answers to shipping destinations, purchase options, return policies, and refund processes.

Using structured FAQPage data, you can qualify your content to display these questions and answers, which can be displayed directly on Google Search and the Assistant, helping users quickly find answers to frequently asked questions. ”

Another reason why FAQ-structured data views were coveted was because it beat one or more competitors from the first page of search results to page two.

SEO responses to frequently asked results with structured data

The initial rollout created both praise and criticism, depending on whether SEO benefited from frequently asked questions in the SERPs, or whether a competitor benefited.

Google showed up to ten frequently asked questions at a time, which could create the situation where two or three web pages could dominate the entire first page of search results.

SEO (@brodieseo) tweeted a screenshot of how often frequently asked questions dominated the search results:

She later tweeted her mixed feelings about the new FAQ-rich results:

“I feel a little awkward complaining about organic results that take up too much space.”

August 2020: Google Reduced Frequently Asked Questions Rich Results

Then about a year later in the summer of 2020, the search marketing community noticed that there were fewer often structured data-rich results displayed in the SERPs.

Google’s John Mueller answered a question about the apparent disappearance of FAQ-rich results.

Mueller said:

“In terms of FAQ marking in general, one of the things I’ve noticed that people talk about online is that we show fewer of these in the search results.

And it’s something from my point of view, it’s a kind of natural development where we try to find the right balance between showing these everywhere and showing these to pages where that kind of makes more sense.

… So we need to fine-tune which, which queries, which pages we want to show the right frequently asked results for. “

May 2021: Frequently Asked Questions Rich results are still missing

In another Google office hangout in May 2021, another Mueller asked what was going on with the rich results with frequently asked questions.

The person who asked the question wanted to know if the structured data no longer returned rich results and asked “Does it work?”

John Mueller replied that Google was still showing FAQ-rich results and that it is going through the normal process of updating the various features and results to ensure that the rich results are useful.

Mueller said:

“What usually happens with some of these structured data types or rich result types is that over time we try to fine-tune how often we show them just to make sure we do not
overloading the search results with all these … bling and extra functionality that just confuses people in the end. ”

Google Announces Frequently Asked Questions Rich Results are Limited

What changed is that Google’s Danny Sullivan announced on Twitter that Google limits FAQ-rich results to just two frequently asked questions per page. Website instead of the previous ten FAQ entries per. Website.

Someone asked if it was in response to SEOs that “played” Google:

Danny Sullivan replied that no, that is not an answer to anyone playing the right FAQ results.

Danny tweeted:

I have seen several people suggest that this is something we did because of SEO games. It is not. SEOs could not play how many we showed. Our automated systems did that. We just review things all the time and decided to show up to two were most helpful when we show it at all.

It started to feel like FAQ Rich Results had disappeared or been put on hold. This new way of displaying FAQ-rich results seems fairer than the original way, which tended to knock more sites off the front of the search results.

Limiting web pages to just two frequently asked questions in the rich results seems like a reasonable way to implement this feature while still being useful to the users.

But do not expect this implementation to be permanent because everything about search is in a constant state of change.
