Additional content is not always required for category pages

Google states that it is not always necessary to add additional content to product category pages if the product names describe what is on the page.

This is stated by Google’s John Mueller during the Google Search Central SEO Hangout, recorded on September 17, 2021.

An SEO named Kamal Allazov asks Mueller about the minimum number of words for product category pages.

It is common for Googlers to ask questions about the ideal word count for web pages, but it is not often that they are asked to do the minimum.

So what is the smallest copy a category page should rank in Google?

The answer is that it may not need any additional content besides displaying the products themselves.

Since it relates to the minimum number of words a category page requires, Mueller says there is no limit.

Allazov presses Mueller to get more details and asks if 300 words would be acceptable, but Mueller will not say that it is or is not.

There must be at least some information on the page so that Google can understand what is written on it. In many cases, this information is conveyed by product names.

“We have no boundaries. There is no limit, so I will not say yes or no. I think this is something where you especially with category pages need to have some information on a page so we understand what the topic is. But it is generally very little information, and in many cases we understand it from the products you have specified anyway. ”

It sounds logical, but it would not work in cases where products have non-descriptive names.

Take the fashion world, for example. A company that sells denim may list a pair of jeans as “Mike” instead of something descriptive like “normal fit, bootcut, dark wash jeans.”

In that case, Google would need additional content to understand more about the page it is crawling.

However, if the product names are more generic, this may be all that Google needs to rank the page.

“If the names of the products are clear enough for us to understand like that – oh, this is, I do not know, like running shoes or something like Nike running shows, Adidas running shoes, different brands, no matter what, then it’s clear that this is a list of running shoes.

You do not need to add extra text there. But sometimes product names are a little hard to understand, and then it might make sense to add some extra text to give us a context there. But it’s usually an extra context in the size of, I do not know, maybe one or two or three sentences. ”

As a final follow-up question, Allazov asks Mueller if he could reuse content from a blog article into a category page.

Mueller says yes, that’s just fine to do.

“Yeah. If you’re talking about a very small amount of text, it’s definitely not a problem to have it duplicated. Normally you would have a lot more in a blog post, and if there are a handful of sentences that are similar, it’s completely fine. ”
